Lakes Area Senior Center Fire Alarm System Completion
Midwest Security & Fire recently completed the installation of a new GE/Edwards Vigilant Fire Alarm System at the Brained Lakes Area Senior Center. Midwest was contracted to remove and replace the system in the entire facility because the existing system was obsolete and inoperative. The building has been home to a hospital and nursing home and now houses the current Senior Center as well as several other community organizations. Since the building was older and had been renovated or expanded multiple times, the installation posed many challenges. Midwest was able to complete the installation and the facility now has a functioning system that will protect the occupants and structure for many years to come.

Lakes Area Senior Center Project
This photo is what the current fire alarm system looked like and shows the control unit that is estimated over 50 years old.
The building, which was formerly a nursing home and hospital, is now the current home to the Lakes Area Senior Center and offices for several area organizations. Although the system has been expanded several times throughout the years, it is estimated that the original controls and devices of the system were installed around 1958. The system was not functional and required replacement for the safety of the buildings occupants, property protection, and to meet various code requirements.
“We are excited to have been selected for the project and will be posting regular updates on the progress. This is a challenging installation due to the buildings constriuction and design”, said Andy Fyock, Project Manager for the installation. Midwest will be installing the addressable system using the GE Vigilant (Edwards) VS Fire Alarm System products. This manufacturer has been leading technology in fire products around the world for decades and Midwest Security & Fire is proud to be the Authorized Vigilant Dealer for Central and Northern MN.

Mikinnaak Child Care Center
Fire System Installation
With assistance from Midwest Security & Fire, Andrea Headbird can turn her dream into a reality. Headbird, founder of Mikinnaak Child Care, hopes to turn her day care into a therapeutic child care center. But first, she needed to purchase a new fire alarm system. Midwest Security & Fire, Inc. provided a new GE Vigilant Fire System to meet all fire codes to the center at a reduced cost. Midwest Security & Fire, Inc. strongly believes in supporting the children, youth, and families of the communities it serves. The gift to Mikinnaak was a great way to show that support. Also working on the project with support of materials or labor were GE Vigilant Fire, Franzen Electrical Services, and Viking Electric Supply.
The new fire system involved installation of fire alarm controls, manual pull stations, smoke detectors, heat detectors, horns and strobes to meet all fire codes and ADA requirments. The installation of the emergency and exit lighting required at the center was also completed in the project. The project was inspected and approved by a Minnesota State Fire Marshall and the Minnesota State Board of Electricity.
About Mikinnaak Child Care
Mikinnaak Child Care (mikinnaak means snapping turtle in the Ojibwe language), was started two years ago by Headbird and her husband, Jess. The day care is located in the basement of St. Peter’s Church, on Third Street and Cedar Avenue in Cass Lake.
The center needed a fire alarm system to become a non-profit organization, which will provide holistic care for children with special needs. “It’s really hard to find a daycare that will work with children with special needs,” said Headbird. Headbird had envisioned a center like this since she started working in child care almost 30 years ago.
According to Headbird, she saw the need for a different type of childcare by looking at the high dropout rate of kids leaving school, a higher rate of grandparents taking sole care of grandchildren, and parents who miss opportunities to diagnose their child because they don’t want to label them. “I’ve seen so many children with behavior issues and special needs,” said Headbird. “So many parents have told me they need a place to bring their children because no one else will take them.”
Children with special needs are often missed at an early age, said Headbird. They must travel from one facility to the next in order for their needs to be met, carrying a long trail of paper with them. “We hope to be the place that parents will feel safe to bring their kids to,” said Headbird. “We hope to offer everything they need under one roof.”
